A shingle product warranty and a contractor's workmanship warranty answer different questions. Read the actual terms of each rather than treating the headline warranty period as proof that every future roof problem is covered.
Identify the covered subject
For the product, ask which material and manufacturer terms apply. For workmanship, ask which installation work and contractor terms apply. Clarify exclusions, any registration requirement, transfer conditions and the process for reporting a concern.
The terms may depend on the product and installation arrangement. Do not infer coverage from a brand name, the appearance of the shingle or another property's warranty. Ask for the documents associated with the specific proposed work.
Preserve the evidence needed later
Keep the accepted estimate, product information, invoices and completion record together. Record who is responsible for any registration and how confirmation will be supplied. If a concern appears, describe it promptly through the stated process rather than assuming a replacement is automatically owed.
Compare roof quotes using the material specification and installation scope as well as warranty terms. A long stated period does not make two different assemblies or contracts equivalent.
